Fabrics for the bed or sofa that will help you combat the heat in your home

High summer temperatures can compromise comfort and relaxation indoors. Even with air-conditioning solutions, crawling into bed or sitting on the sofa to watch a movie can feel uncomfortable if the right fabrics are not chosen for this time of year.

The following tips will help improve the comfort inside the home, along with the great landscaping work that we carry out in our projects at Real de La Quinta to reduce the heat island effect, a common issue in urban areas, which we minimize with a lower density of buildings than in a large city. Since we located in a natural environment and have carefully planned our native Mediterranean vegetation (better adapted to our climat, being more sustainable with lower water consumption), all of this allows to create a pleasant temperature inside and outside the home.

Bed linen for warm summer nights

Summer bed linen should enhance the feeling of freshness and lightness, helping to maintain a body temperature suitable for rest. But it should also feel pleasant to the touch and, of course, be in line with the décor of the room.

In this sense, the most recommended fabrics for bed linen on warmer nights are:

  • Washed linen: a very soft and resistant material that absorbs moisture and enhances freshness. It is especially recommended for sensitive skin.
  • Cotton percale: its long fibres make up a dense and resistant material that stays fresh all night long. As well as being very soft to the touch, it is suitable for all kinds of prints.
  • Cotton sateen: this is a double-textured fabric, with a matt finish on the reverse side and a very soft texture on the front. Thanks to its breathability, it facilitates the regulation of body temperature.

More effective upholstery against heat

Although you don't spend as many hours on the sofa as on the bed and there is less contact with your body, the choice of upholstery and cushions will also have a decisive impact on comfort. Avoid synthetic materials that increase perspiration and retain odours, and invest in natural fabrics such as:

  • Cotton gauze: commonly used for sofa cushions because of its elegant embossed look that contrasts well with smooth textures. Its fibres make a loose and breathable fabric.
  • Linen/cotton: the mixture of the two materials makes the most of the strength of one and the softness of the other. Linen/cotton upholstery does not retain heat and can be used in a wide variety of colours, making it ideal also from the point of view of living room aesthetics.
