The mountains of Marbella are the habitat of a wide variety of animals. Its communities are made up of species characteristic of southern Europe, with a clear Mediterranean influence and the sporadic visit of African birds on their migratory route. The Sierra de la Nieves is a good example of the richness of the area's fauna and its great biodiversity.

This is what the fauna in the Sierra de las Nieves is like

The natural area of the Sierra de las Nieves is inhabited by a large community of birds, mammals, reptiles and rodents that provide a great biodynamic interest to the place. The result of this balance is the development of an equally rich flora that gives this area a unique identity

La fauna de esta zona montañosa de Marbella se puede clasificar en 5 grupos principales:

  1. Forest animals such as roe deer, fallow deer and muffons. They mainly inhabit areas of pine, holm oak and gall oak woods, together with such characteristic birds as the chaffinch, the cuckoo and the robin.
  2. Scrubland animals, above all, small herbivorous mammals that move around in those areas where there are fewer trees, such as hares and rabbits. Amphibians such as the common toad and reptiles such as the blind snake are also abundant in the area, while the sky is dominated by birds of prey such as the lesser kestrel, the black kite and the little owl.
  3. Rupicolous animals, those that feel at home among the numerous rock formations of the Sierra and its steep profile. This is the habitat of mountain goats, golden eagles, griffon vultures and ravens.
  4. Riparian animals such as the salamander, the southern frog, the otter or the polecat, prefer to move around the watercourses and their surrounding areas. This environment is also preferred by birds such as the white wagtail and the dipper, which, as their name suggests, have a close relationship with water.
  5. Animals of wastelands and grasslands that have adapted to what remains of former cultivated areas, such as the common vole or the field vole. These are also common areas for swallows.

According to the fauna inventory of the Sierra de las Nieves, there are 194 different species of animals including amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and mammals.
