Wind and water. That is literally what Feng Shui is; a Chinese philosophy that promotes the connection between humans and the natural environment. Applied to the principles of decoration, Feng Shui is also the gateway to a harmonious home full of good energies.

The natural environment of Real de La Quinta is ideal for applying Feng Shui in interior design. The principles of this practice are enhanced by integrating nature into the home, taking advantage of the strategic location of the homes and the positive energy flow offered by the views, creating a harmonious space in the middle of nature.

How to apply Feng Shui to the different spaces in your home

Feng Shui in the interior design of a home is the search for a new organisation of the living space to be more connected with the natural world. This harmony between people and environment takes different forms depending on the space in the house that we want to decorate. These are the basic principles of Feng Shui in the most important rooms of the home:

  • Feng Shui in the living room

Neutral, light colours are preferred, giving a sense of peace and serenity. The furniture, manufacturing materials and textiles should be natural, preferring rounded shapes rather than sharp corners. The intensity of the light should be regular and spread as much as possible to all corners of the room, which is why the use of mirrors is recommended, but never in front of a door.

  • Feng Shui in the bedroom

From the bed there should be a good view of the door. However, the foot of the bed should not be aligned with the door. Only the head of the bed may be in contact with a wall to allow energy to flow through the remaining three free sides. Sheers should be used instead of curtains on the windows, as natural light is essential, and artificial lighting should always be warm and punctual.

  • Feng Shui in the kitchen

Ideally, the kitchen should face south and not too far from the main entrance to the house. The hob, oven and microwave should be kept in line, as well as the sink, dishwasher and washing machine, so that the fire and water elements are clearly differentiated. Worktops should be kept clean and tidy, and knives should always be stored in drawers so that they do not ‘cut off’ energy. The use of small plants will not only add a green and natural touch, but will also attract abundance. Mirrors should not be used in this room.

  • Feng Shui in the bathroom

Bathroom doors as well as the toilet lid should always remain closed. The ideal shower tray is flush with the floor and uninterrupted. To enhance the energy of the water, it should flow through stone or ceramic tiles with rounded edges and harmonious shapes. In the case of furniture and accessories, any plastic or synthetic pieces should be replaced by wood or bamboo options.
