Making the most of natural light in your home: what do you need to know?
Natural light stimulates the production of serotonin in the brain (the happiness hormone), promotes concentration, and reduces stress and anxiety. Considering that we spend 90% of our day indoors, using natural light in the home is essential to ensure good health and quality of life.
In the real estate developments of Real de La Quinta we take this very much into account. We design and build the homes to maximize the natural light posible by incorporating large windows, which also allows to enjoy the incredible views of the Costa del Sol coastline and the natural surroundings of the Sierra de las Nieves.
4 tips to make the most of natural light at home
There is no need to open new window openings or keep the curtains completely drawn, which means a certain loss of privacy. Making the most of natural light inside the home is very simple by applying these tips:
1. Redistribute the furnishings and decoration
Even in the largest rooms, poor furniture layout can prevent light from circulating. It is best to avoid excess furniture and furniture that is too large. Successful redistribution of the furniture in a room means eliminating all those elements obstructing the passage of light. In this sense, less is more.
2. Paint the walls in light colours
Colours that reflect light generate a greater sense of spaciousness and harmony. Using white, light grey or pastel tones in rooms such as the living room will make it feel more cheerful and luminous. Another trick to enhance these energies is to use lacquered or metallic furniture.
At Real de La Quinta, wall color selection is key to interior design. For our properties, we opt for light tones, such as off-whites or soft colors, which not only make the most of natural light but also visually expand the spaces.
3. Decorate with mirrors
If light colours favour the brightness of the rooms, mirrors even more. For this decorative trick to work perfectly, it is advisable to place the mirrors on walls or doors on the opposite side of the windows. This way, they will multiply the light they receive and provide greater depth to the space.
4. Use translucent curtains
To let light into the home's rooms, it is not necessary to do without curtains. Light, airy fabrics let light in and help create a warmer and more comfortable atmosphere in your home. Another practical and aesthetically pleasing solution is the motorised roller sun-screen curtains. These sunscreens are great for rooms very exposed to the sun, as they soften the light entry while maintaining a good illumination level.
